How does inbound email virus scanning work?
Should our virus scanning software discover a virus in the e-mail sent to you, the following things will happen:
The virus scanning software will attempt to disinfect (disable) the virus. If the disinfection is successful, the "cured" file will be sent to your mailbox with a message advising you that a virus was detected and removed from your inbound e-mail.
In the rare event that the virus scanning software is unable to disinfect the virus (note that all viruses cannot be disinfected) we will still deliver the original virus-embedded file to your mailbox for your records. However, we will include with your e-mail, an alert message advising you that a virus was detected but could not be removed from your inbound e-mail. Why? Pathway realizes that your e-mail belongs to you and you alone. We will, therefore, not destroy an e-mail addressed to you. However, our alert will advise you that a virus was detected. We strongly suggest that you destroy the infected file if you are unable to open it safely yourself.
In rare cases the virus scanning software may detect that the email sent to you contains a password protected archive file (zip, tar, war). This can prevent our Virus Scanner from doing a complete inspection of email. Several viruses spread using this method to prevent detection by virus scanners. In this case you will receive a warning message. The warning message will have an attachment containing the original, unaltered email as it was sent to you. The warning message will advise you to verify the legitimacy of such email.
In rare cases the virus scanning software may detect that the email sent to you contains a corrupted file. This can prevent our Virus Scanner from scanning such file. You will receive a warning message. The warning message will have an attachment containing the original, unaltered email as it was sent to you. The warning message will advise you to delete such email.
In rare cases the virus scanning software may detect that the email sent to you contains a file, which is similar to known viruses, but not present in its virus database. In this case you will receive a warning message. The warning message will have an attachment containing the original, unaltered email as it was sent to you. The warning message will advise you to verify the legitimacy of such email.
Who may subscribe to this service?

Inbound e-mail virus scanning is available to all Pathway clients. If you are a Pathway corporate or residential high-speed customer, please rest assured that your incoming email is already being scanned for viruses. This service is available free of charge to:

   1) Broadband, Fibre, T1, ISDN, Dual Analog and Wireless business Internet clients
  2) Residential FastPath and LightPath high-speed subscribers

If you are not a Pathway corporate or residential high-speed customer you may sign for inbound e-mail virus scanning service for only $9.99 a year (plus GST) per mailbox - that's less than 85 cents a month.

Can anyone at Pathway read my e-mail if it is being scanned for viruses?
No. All your inbound e-mail is scanned by enterprise class software completely automatically. NO Pathway employee has the ability to read, search or otherwise access or retrieve information from your e-mail at any time.
Does Pathway guarantee that you will never receive (or send) a virus?
Pathway uses one of the best commercial virus scanning and disinfection software tools available in the market - software that has been endorsed by industry experts, commercial organizations and other large ISPs. However, no virus scanning service can guarantee that you will never receive a virus-infected file - and Pathway does not, and cannot, guarantee that you will never receive a virus. There are two reasons for this:
Pathway's virus scanning service scans only e-mail - the most common form of virus transmission. There are several other means through which your computer system(s) can still be infected with viruses, including via files downloaded from websites, floppy disks or FTP sites.
New viruses are constantly being created and distributed every day. Pathway's scanning service regularly updates virus signatures (the profiles of known viruses) every hour from a very large commercial database of known viruses. This database is constantly managed, maintained and updated by a professional services firm, which is acknowledged as a world leader in anti-virus software. However, there is always the chance that new viruses propagate before they are entered into the virus database.
I already have anti-virus software already installed on my system. Why do I need Pathway's service?
We at Pathway are constantly asked by our users why their systems have become infected even though they have anti-virus software installed on their computers. In general, commercially purchased software requires you to:
Initially purchase virus protection software and configure and install it
Pay an annual subscription fee and
Perform live updates of virus signatures yourself REGULARLY. For your software to be truly effective, you MUST update your virus signatures every time you log on and before you check your e-mail.
Should you fail to perform each of these tasks, chances are that you open your system up to access by viruses.

With Pathway's service, there is no software to install or configure. All your e-mail is scanned before it is even delivered to your mailbox. Virus patterns (signatures) are updated every hour. You do not need to perform live updates. Should our software detect a virus in your inbound e-mail, not only do you receive an alert, but so does the person sending you the e-mail. And the service is truly inexpensive - our solution costs less than 85 cents per mailbox per month.

It is a good idea to have some anti-virus software available on your home or office system. This will help you clean your system of a virus if you are hit. If you do subscribe to our virus scanning service there should be no adverse impact on your system if you already have other anti-virus software installed.
Will Pathway's service clean my computer system of viruses if my system is inadvertently infected with a virus?
No. If your system is infected with a virus, Pathway's virus scanning service cannot clean up your computer system. There are, however, several sources from where you can obtain one-time applications and patches that will clean your system. We will try to publish these sources from time to time for your benefit. Prevention is still the best cure.
