Entertainment along the route will motivate you to a fast finish. Starts on Yonge St. just north of Eglinton, finishes at Roundhouse Park by the CN Tower with a post-run party. Glenn’s (aka Grand Poobah’s) opinion: This is Toronto’s best race. One of the Toronto Star’s “Ten Top Runs,” 2003. Family atmosphere. Excellent organization by the Longboat Roadrunners. Great view of the skyline. Very flat course with varied terrain. Also includes a 5K run and a 1K kids fun run. Tracy G: The atmosphere of taking a ferry to where you race and the fact I was there as a kid for picnics and amusement rides makes it the best. Jacquie’s (10K) and Anne’s (5K) first races, 2001 & 2004. The weather can be very hot. 11:15 a.m. start. Best advice: Take the early ferries.

John Bingham was the guest speaker for the 2004 and 2005 races! Toronto Penguins have volunteered as course marshalls at Bay & Wellington since 2004. From CRS: Sign up for the marathon, half marathon or 5K on courses that are fast, flat and festive. Entertainment stations along the routes will keep you motivated and entertained (11 on the marathon route), as will the welcome concert at City Hall, a huge free 2-day runners expo, online training help and more. This event features a “Charity Challenge” that in 2006 raised over $700,000 for local charities.

Runners are divided into “packs” based on speed and faster runners are held back to give ordinary runners a head start! Always a popular Penguin marathon, the Disney Marathon has a reputation as “beginner-friendly” because of its generous finishing time (7 hrs) and excellent organization. Many Penguins participated in the tenth annual WDW races in 2003. FYI, the finishers medals are shaped like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck — for the marathon and half-marathon, respectively. The mother of all marathons. Penguin participation at Boston takes many forms, including running, cheering and volunteering. There is also a popular pre-race dinner held by the local Penguins and “Dead” runners (i.e., from the Dead Runners Society). The race is always held on Patriots’ Day, the third Monday in April and a New England public holiday. Toronto Penguin Esther qualified for and ran the 2005 race!

San Diego hosts this popular marathon. The first edition of this race (1998) was one of the biggest Penguin encounters in history. Unfortunately, the race didn’t live up to expectations; plenty of first-time mistakes left it with a bad rep. However, organizers corrected those mistakes the following year and the race is now deservedly a popular Penguin encounter.

In 2004, the half-marathon distance replaced the former 20K. John “The Penguin” Bingham bought the rights to the oldest race in Chicago and grew it back to a must-do race in the Windy City. Now organized by Elite Racing. Consistently ranked by Runner’s World as one of the premier races in the nation, it attracts more than 6,000 participants from the United States, Canada and as far away as New Zealand. Formerly known as the Chicago Distance Classic, this was the host race of the first Penguin World Conference in 1999. Be warned: The race attracts notoriously hot and sunny weather! Race finishes at Grant Park.

One of the most popular and fastest marathons in the world. More than 20,000 runners tour the Windy City on a pancake-flat course. The men’s marathon world record was set here in the 1980s. In 2004, Virginia Penguin Nancy Toby and other Penguins are planning to run the race in memory of Nancy’s child, Anna. Glenn’s (1997) second and PR marathon (4:21). The 2007 race was shut down mid-race due to extremely hot weather conditions.

Where the Penguin Brigade began. In 1996, a group of runners calling themselves the “Penguin Brigade” ran for the first time. Today, that group has grown to more than a thousand international members. In 2000, the Brigade celebrated its fifth anniversary by returning to Washington, D.C., and running the “Marathon of the Monuments.” Mila and Nancy’s (2002), Kathryn’s (2000) as well as Tony’s (2005) first marathon. The 2005 race will represent the tenth (!) anniversary of the Penguin Brigade.
